Normal thing around here. The older cows teach the younger ones what to do. I wasn’t around when the need to cross the road to better pastures was started, but cows know what we are trying to do. At least we think they do.
Summer heat & hay
Almost a month ago, but if you look close you can see the boys in the tractors.
A little company…
They are soo curious. I would spray them, they would jump and run, and then come right back for more. I had plenty of company AND entertainment while watering the garden tonight.
Has it been that long?
Since I last posted? Since we were breaking heifers? Time just goes too quickly these days.
First day of breaking heifers.
We were here to help Cherry
W's show heifer, Cherry, needed a little help delivering her new baby boy. Again, the kids and Andy had it taken care of. A few cuss words, lots of grunting and some more pulling produced a live bull calf. He was pretty stressed meaning he will need help getting up and making it to the milk.
Hunting is done, well, for now
Late to share, but I didn’t forget. Boy boys shot some ‘impressive for around here' bucks on the farm. We are surrounded by hunters so getting anything like these is impressive.
Our favorite little neighbors help out
Who doesn't love to feed a bottle calf? Some of our favorite little neighbors visited to help with chores. The pups have to be part of the fun too. ♡♡♡
Cow whisperer
G is a cow whisperer. She can work or move cows like she is in direct communication with their leader. So calm. Love working with this girl..
This year's crop
Not the best, but I’m still thankful for what we did get. Someone admitted that there are fewer pretty ones this year because he would grab one each time he passed on the lawn mower. ;)
Learning never stops
Attending a conference to learn more about genetics and how certain genes affect our Basset Hound breeding program. I loved genetics class….takes me back to my college course. I got excited that a gene had been found to identify shedding in hounds, but nope.. Sorry… still no cure to the Basset shedding.
Tomatoes ♡
Just keep picking. Just keep picking. Going on week 4 or 5 of picking. Pick them, cut them up and freeze. Hope to be making salsa soon. Thanks G for the photo.
It has been awhile
Yep. We have been missing for a bit. Just enjoying time and working on life. Everyone is gearing up for fairs right now. I hope to do better with sharing!
Doesn't Fancy look happy to be getting a cool down and bath? 😉
Weaning & weighing
Mom isn’t needed anymore. The kids have it handled and prefer if I just stay out of the way. :) I guess it is safer that way.
God's beauty
G is still capturing beauty when she sees it. It's just an old barn and equipment, but it's made beautiful with God's nature.
Mud is what's left
A week of rain and drizzle will make for muddy chores. Cows don’t seem to mind so much.
Prayers for those without
Praying for those without power, heat, fuel, warm place and anything else that is needed to keep families and animals warm and safe. Prayers for all. It may be pretty for photos, but it is devastating to those without. Andy and boys have spent many hours thawing out many frozen cattle/horse waterers. Home and all animals are good, just a bit tougher than anyone would like. Prayers for those without.
Snowy and a bit messy
Chores have to be done! It isn’t bad that it snowed… just takes a bit longer to do chores. There is the slush AND you have to stop to take photos. G took these while her and W were doing chores this morning. ♡♡♡ them.
Last time to lead them
Well, the boys are moving onto bigger things. They sold their goat herd and are investing in a few more cows. A few Hereford for W and more Charolais for A. Do want you love, right?
It's that time of year…
My kids give me a hard time for wearing bibs weeks, maybe months, before anyone else. That's ok… I would rather do chores warm than cold. It's that time of year when the bibs stay on the muck boots.
He can AI - his dream come true
He has wanted to do this since he was 5 or 6, maybe earlier. After classes (finally, thanks covid) he can do it!
